Fully biological filtration, without a pump or electricity

A biofilter is a plant-based filter that requires no mechanical components.
No pump, no electricity, and no moving parts. Water purification is carried out entirely by plants, substrate, and bacteria.

By stacking pond crates, you can create a stable filter tower or filter wall where plants are positioned at exactly the right depth. This makes the biofilter particularly suitable for:

deep ponds without zones
ponds where plants don't usually take root well
situations where technology is undesirable

This allows you to provide natural filtration in areas where it would normally be difficult to do so, without making any changes to the pond.

Vertical substrate filter

Is your pond deeper than 60 cm? If so, order additional pond crates to raise your biofilter. Fill these crates as well with STEP ONE Pond substrate for extra stability and optimal filtration.

Modular system that adapts to any pond depth

A standard biofilter tower consists of three pond crates and is approximately 48 cm tall. This is ideal for ponds about 60 cm deep.
If your pond is deeper or shallower, you can easily adjust the height by stacking more or fewer crates.

Important guideline:
The top of the topmost crate should be about 10 cm below the water surface. This ensures the plants get enough light and can filter the water effectively.

Each crate is filled with STEP ONE Pond substrate. This is crucial for proper functioning:

maximum biological filtration
sturdy and stable construction
ideal environment for bacteria and root growth

The plants take root through the crates and the growing medium, forming a single, sturdy structure that will last for years.

If you place several biofilter towers side by side, you create a fully functional plant filter. At the same time, you can separate different zones: plants and filtration on one side, and space for large fish or a swimming area on the other. The plants remain protected, and the water is continuously biologically purified.
