When should you choose a plant island?

A floating plant island is the solution for ponds without a shoreline or a plant filter. Think of minimalist ponds, deep ponds, liner ponds, or fish ponds where plants cannot take root in the bottom. The plants grow on the water’s surface and absorb nutrients directly from the pond water through their roots.

Because the island floats, the water surface remains largely open. This allows you to combine natural filtration with sufficient light and oxygen in the pond.

What are the benefits of a plant island for your pond?

The plants on the island:

absorb nutrients that would otherwise feed algae

provide shade, which helps keep the water from heating up

provide hiding places for fish and insects

operate continuously, without a pump or mechanical components

This makes a plant island particularly suitable for ponds with cloudy water, silt buildup, and algae problems where traditional planting is lacking.

Filter island or plant island?

A plant island focuses on balance and shade.
A filter island is more focused on water purification and is often used in larger ponds or where there is a higher fish population.

As a general rule of thumb: the larger the pond or the more fish there are, the larger the island or the more plants you’ll need.
