Best Pond substrate clear water and vigorous plant growth

A healthy pond starts with the bottom. That’s why we’ve spent years testing all kinds of substrates in our own nursery: lava rock, gravel, sand, clay, and inexpensive garden center mixes. We always ran into the same problem: poor root growth, few bacteria, silt buildup, and cloudy water after 1–2 years.

Why STEP ONE works STEP ONE

STEP ONE made of fired clay with the right texture:

Heavy enoughto stay on the bottom
Highly porous, allowing bacteria and roots to attach effectively
Grain size 7–15 mmto allow plenty of space for air, bacteria, and roots

This creates a natural filter layer that keeps your water clear and helps plants grow vigorously. This is the same substrate we use to grow all our plants and in our own ponds.

Why lava, gravel, and sand are less suitable

Lava: too coarse, poor root establishment
Gravel: too dense, almost no air
Sand: clogs up quickly, lacks aeration, and hinders root growth

Result: few bacteria, weak plants, cloudy water.

How much substrate do you need?

Pond substrate: approx. 10 cm layer to support a stable bacterial population and healthy root growth
Plant filter: approx. 20 cm for maximum natural filtration

Frequently Asked Questions About Pond substrate

Do I need to wash the substrate?

No, that's not necessary. We rinse it before shipping. There may still be some fine dust, but it will settle on its own within a few days.

Can I add it to a stocked pond?

Yes, you can do that. Just sprinkle it gently over the water's surface and let it sink to the bottom on its own.

Why is there sometimes something floating around?

Because it’s so porous, there’s air inside at first. After a few days, everything sinks once the granules have absorbed water.

How long does the substrate last?

STEP ONE Pond substrate last a lifetime. It doesn’t need to be replaced as long as you have enough plants and bacteria in the pond. You should only replace part of it if a significant amount of sludge builds up.

Can I use lava or gravel?

It’s possible, but plants won’t grow as well and the filtration will stop working sooner. Lava and gravel are less porous and cause the substrate to become clogged. That’s why we don’t recommend it.
