How to Build a Mini Pond in 6 Steps (Without a Pump or Filter)

Creating a mini pond is easy. If you use the right plants, you won’t need a pump or filter, and you can enjoy clear water all year round.

The only 5 things you need:

A container, bucket, or bowl (preferably not metal or jet black)
Pond substrate
Pond plants (4 different types)
Pond bacteria
Tap water

Step 1: Choose a container or pot

Choose a nice planter or pot that matches the style of your garden, patio, or balcony.
Important:

At least 20 cm deep, so the plants can take root and grow properly.
I'd rather not have a metal or black container, because they heat up quickly in the sun.

Step 2: Choose a location

Mini pond plants

You can set up a small pond in your garden, on your patio, or on your balcony. Please note:

A mini pond contains a small amount of shallow water. It heats up quickly.
Full sun leads to increased algae growth and faster water evaporation.

Here's how to avoid problems:

Choose a spot that gets a few hours of sun a day, but not full sun all day long.
Avoid placing black or metal containers in direct sunlight.
Always add enough oxygenating plants. These:
- Protect the water from direct sunlight
- Improve water quality
- Preventing algae

Still want a black or metal container?
Place it in a partially shaded spot, wrap an insulating layer around the container, and add extra oxygenating plants to help keep it from overheating.

For a small pond, I always recommend adding extra oxygenating plants. Because the water is shallow, it heats up quickly. These plants help protect the water from the sun, keep it healthy, and limit algae growth

Want to create a playful effect? Place some stones on the bottom to create different levels.
This way, you can arrange plants at different levels and create a natural-looking mini pond.

Provides a solid foundation for root growth

Without a growing medium, carrots grow poorly and have a shorter lifespan.

An area of about1 m² is ideal.
Use a container with a depth of25 to 40 cm.
Your pond will then hold between100 and 400 litersof water, which provides enough volume for stable water conditions and healthy plants.

Where should I put my mini pond?

A mini pond can be placed almost anywhere:

Balcony

Patio

The most important rule:avoid direct sunlight all day long.
In direct sunlight, you’re more likely to get:

Algae
Burnt pond plants
Excessively high water temperatures

A spot with partial shade is ideal.

Can you keep fish in a small pond?

In most small ponds, it isnot recommendedto keep fish.

Why not?

The water heats up quickly in the sun, especially when there isn't much of it
Water that is too warm reduces fish survival rates
In winter, when ice forms, the oxygen level drops rapidly

For a mini pond or balcony pond,plants without fishare the safest and most stable choice.

Should I bring my mini pond indoors for the winter?

No, your mini pond can stay outside just fine, unless it has alotusin it.
