Repairing a Leaky Pond: Tips for Locating and Fixing the Leak

Finding and repairing a leak in pond liner can be a challenging task. Make sure you have the right materials on hand to effectively seal the leak. Important: Carefully check whether the leak is caused by a one-time damage or because the pond liner has aged and needs to be replaced. If the liner is old, repairing it is often pointless, and you can expect leaks to occur again shortly. In that case, it is better to replace the liner entirely. Tip: Consider EPDM liner if you need a new pond liner. Although it’s more expensive, it’s significantly stronger and lasts up to three times longer than standard PVC liner.

About this product

A leak in your pond is something you’ll want to fix right away. With the PVC Liner Repair Kit, you can effectively and easily repair damage to your pond liner. This kit includes high-quality, soft PVC adhesive and a 20 x 40 cm piece of PVC liner, so you can get started right away and get your pond back in top condition.

What makes this product special

How do I locate a leak in my pond?
If the water level remains lower but at the same level, the hole in the wall will be above the current water level. This is helpful. Add a few centimeters of water to the pond and look along the pond’s edge to see if you can find the leak. You can do this, for example, with a colored liquid like milk, so you can see where the water is flowing; this will be where the leak is. You can patch the leak just like an air mattress using a repair kit available in stores.
If the hole is in the bottom, the pond will drain completely. You’ll have to wait for this to happen before you can locate the leak. Once the pond is nearly empty, you can try the same tactic with the milk again in the small amount of water remaining at the bottom.
Finally, with older ponds, the liner may have worn out, causing water to slowly seep away. This is more common with ponds lined with PVC liner, as it has a shorter lifespan than rubber liner—about 8 to 10 years versus at least 20 years. In this case, the entire pond will need to be drained and relined. Check out the step-by-step guide for building (or rebuilding) a pond.

Quality and origin

How do you fix a pond leak?
Lower the water level well below the leak.
Thoroughly clean the area around the leak, for example with rubbing alcohol.
Check if a sharp object is causing the leak and remove it if necessary.
Depending on the type of liner (PVC or EPDM), purchase a suitable repair kit from a garden or pond center or online. For PVC liners, use PVC adhesive and a piece of liner; for EPDM, use rubber adhesive and a piece of rubber liner.
Once the leak has been repaired, you can refill the pond.

Practical Information

What causes a leaky pond?
Causes of pond leaks: If a pond is leaking, the liner is no longer watertight. This can be caused by:

A leak in the bottom: the pond drains completely. This leak may be caused by the pond liner aging. PVC pond liner lasts an average of 8–10 years, while EPDM pond liner lasts an average of 20 years. If this period has passed without the liner being replaced, there is a risk that a leak will develop in the pond and that the pond will drain.
A leak in the wall: the water stops dropping once the leak level is reached. This problem can also be caused by aged pond liner, but it may also be due to an animal gnawing a hole in the liner or plant roots piercing the liner, which may have already become somewhat porous.
Porous PVC liner: patching won’t help; the liner needs to be replaced. PVC liner lasts 8–10 years, whereas rubber liner (EPDM) takes at least 20 years to become porous.
