Marimo, also known as Cladophora aegagropila, is not moss but a rare species of algae that moves slowly across the bottom by rolling. In doing so, it absorbs dirt and waste, helping to keep the pond clean and healthy. These compact balls are oxygenating plants with a unique appearance and an impressive lifespan of up to 100 years. They improve water quality without the need for pumps or filters. Every Marimo moss ball in our selection comes from our own nursery and is grown organically without the use of artificial substances. Upon arrival, they are about 3 centimeters in size. In water, they absorb moisture and grow to about 5 centimeters. Their gentle movement across the bottom acts as a natural water filter. Sometimes they float to the surface briefly due to air bubbles, but a simple squeeze sends them back down. No other oxygenating plant is so low-maintenance and unique. Marimo grow extremely slowly—only 5 mm per year—but they remain active for years. They require little care, are hardy, and adapt to various water conditions. Because they grow slowly and hardly age at all, they make a great addition to any pond. For a balanced pond, we recommend planting at least 10 to 12 individual oxygenating plants per 1,000 liters of water, and 2 baskets of oxygenating plants (containing 4 plants each) per 1,000 liters of water for the shallow areas. No matter what I tried, the water in my pond just wouldn't clear up. After exchanging a few emails, I decided to order this complete kit, though to be honest, I wasn't very confident it would work.
