Back at Johan's natural pond

Earlier, Simon advised Johan on the design of his natural pond, based on a completely natural approach in which plants keep the water in balance. Now, some time later, Simon returns to see how the pond has developed and what results those choices have yielded in practice. The natural pond clearly demonstrates the benefits of a good planting plan. Along the edges, cattails prevent leaves and debris from blowing into the water as easily and help absorb excess nutrients. The fields of white Water lilies shade, limit heating from the sun, and offer fish and other life a safe place to shelter and reproduce. Beneath the water’s surface, Ceratophyllum Stratiotes aloides break down Stratiotes aloides that would otherwise feed algae. The result is a clear natural pond that is visibly in balance, without technology or chemicals, exactly as Johan had envisioned.

Aquatic plants filter nitrite and nitrate

Free-floating oxygenating plants ≈ deprive algae of nutrients

Water lily field ≈ protects water from warming

What I like best is that I don't have to do anything to maintain it. The pond is clear, peaceful, and just feels natural—exactly as I wanted it to be.

Simon van der Velde

Over the past 40 years, I’ve observed more than 1,000 natural ponds. Time and again, I see the same mistakes being made—mistakes that later lead to cloudy water, algae, or disappointment. If you get these three points right, you’ll prevent 80% of the problems.

3 Key Considerations for a Natural Pond

Natural pond

1. Choose a complete natural pond kit

Work with a complete natural pond kit.

The Natural Pond Kits include:

  • Tall marsh plants that filter nutrients from the water
  • Floating oxygenating plants that help prevent algae growth
  • Water lilies protect the water from warming

Not having enough plants almost always leads to a pond becoming overrun with algae.

Clay soil

2. The right soil: natural clay, no plastic sheeting

A true natural pond has a natural clay bottom.

  • No substrate required
  • No foil needed
  • The soil itself forms the biological foundation

The wrong type of substrate can lead to instability and silt buildup.
Over time, the pond can become increasingly silted up and eventually disappear.

Therefore, add a POND CARE maintenance kit twice a year to break down organic waste and maintain the biological balance.

POND CARE

3. Keeping track of nutrients

Algae are caused by an excess of nutrients.

Important:

  • Do not overfeed the fish
  • Plant tall marsh plants along the shore to prevent debris from blowing into the pond
  • Apply the POND CARE maintenance package twice a year to promote biological breakdown

A natural pond is a biological system.
Balance can only be achieved when the food source, substrate, and vegetation are in harmony.

Water Management Project, Municipality of Lansingerland

As part of the Lansingerland municipality’s water management project, the decision was made to redesign ditches to be more natural and attractive, including the addition of water lily beds. These not only enhance the streetscape but also actively contribute to greater biodiversity by providing more habitat for insects, fish, and other aquatic life. In addition, Water lilies help keep Water lilies water cool in the summer and limit algae growth by filtering sunlight. The result is clear water and ditches that are no longer green, smelly waterways, but places where residents visibly enjoy spending time.

Before and after: natural improvement of the ditch

Before the water lily beds were planted, the water heated up quickly, allowing algae and duckweed to run rampant and turning the ditch green and unattractive. Due to the lack of shade, sunlight could penetrate deep into the water, resulting in excessive algae growth. After the creation of water lily beds, the effect is clearly visible. The large floating leaves keep sunlight out of the water, keeping the water cooler and preventing algae from thriving. At the same time, the plants absorb nutrients, creating more space for natural aquatic life. The result is clearer water, greater biodiversity, and a ditch that once again fits in with its surroundings.

Natural Pond Plant Package

Marnix wanted a natural garden pond without any technology or chemicals, but one based entirely on plants. He followed our 6-step plan and chose a complete pond package, containing all the plants a pond needs to maintain its natural balance, carefully selected so that the species complement each other perfectly. Combined with the porous Pond substrate STEP ONE the bottom and the Pond bacteria the POND CARE package, this ensures a stable, clear, and healthy pond without any additional intervention.
